Construction Requires Extended Lane Reduction on FM 969 (MLK Blvd.)

(Austin, Texas) – Beginning on Friday, February 3, 2017, and continuing for approximately six months, FM 969 (East Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.) will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Tannehill Lane and Regency Drive at the US 183 interchange. The lane reduction is necessary to accommodate construction of a new wider bridge at US 183, as part of the 183 South project. Initially, the lane reduction will involve restriping FM 969 (MLK Blvd.) so westbound traffic can be moved over to one of the two eastbound lanes. Once a portion of the new bridge is completed, traffic in both directions will be detoured onto the new bridge so demolition of the old bridge can take place, and the remainder of the new bridge can be constructed. During this phase of the project drivers passing through this interchange may experience increased travel delays. Work on the new bridge should be completed in late 2017.

About 183 South: The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority is building a new tolled expressway with three lanes in each direction on an eight-mile section of US 183 between US 290 and SH 71. In addition, the Mobility Authority will be reconstructing and improving the non-tolled US 183 general purpose lanes and adding $25 million worth of pedestrian and bicyclist facilities. The project will open in phases between 2019 and 2020, offering greater mobility for all users of the corridor.
